Slovenia may be a small country, but it is positively packed with beautiful places to visit.
Cities, castles, soaring mountains, picturesque beach towns, idyllic lakes, and even wine country: whatever kind of beauty you prefer, there’s no doubt that you can find the perfect Slovenia travel destination for you.
As we started planning our first trip to Slovenia, we quickly realized we had several trips worth of Slovenia bucket list destinations we wanted to cover… and those frantic notes and daydreams eventually became this blog post!
We’ve divided these places to go in Slovenia into several different categories, and we highly recommend prioritizing visiting a variety of destinations in order to see a wide swath of the most beautiful places in Slovenia.
Luckily, in a country as small as Slovenia, this isn’t difficult to pull off: even a 30-minute drive can deliver you to some wildly diverse Slovenia travel destinations!
If you’re planning a trip to Slovenia and are eager to add as much variety to your trip as possible, here are 25 beautiful places to consider adding to your bucket list.
Cities + Towns to Visit in Slovenia
Ljubljana
Slovenia’s lively, funky capital city is packed full of interesting sights, from the Dragon Bridge to the incredible European street art in Metelkova to Ljubljana Castle that overlooks the city.
If you love visiting offbeat cities in Europe, be sure to start your Slovenia travels with a stay colorful Ljubljana!
Plus, as a bonus, Ljubljana is extremely well-connected to the rest of the country, and you can visit many of the top places to see in Slovenia on day trips from the capital!
Whether you want to sign up for an organized day trip through Slovenia’s highlights or rent a car and set off to find a quiet corner, Ljubljana makes an excellent home base for exploring the country.
Maribor
Surrounded by hills used for growing wine grapes and packed with colorful buildings and interesting history, Slovenia’s second-largest city only gets a fraction of the visitors of Ljubljana… but that’s all the more reason to visit.
Be sure to pay a visit to the Maribor Castle, stroll around Glavni Trg (the city’s main square), wander through the picturesque Lent neighborhood, and admire views of the city from across the Drava River.
If you’re the kind of traveler who loves wandering beautiful streets and cafe-hopping as you make your way between a handful of uncrowded attractions, don’t skip Maribor.
Piran
Situated on a tiny peninsula that juts into the Adriatic Sea, Piran is the jewel of Slovenia’s small slice of coastline and is easily among the most beautiful places to visit in Slovenia.
In just one day, you can hit up most of the best things to do in Piran, including soaking in the views from the town walls, visiting Tartini Square, and strolling along the coast, and still have time to hit the water and swim for a bit.
However, if you’re anything like us and so many other travelers who fall in love with Piran, you might find yourself tempted to linger for a bit longer!
Bovec
Located in the absolutely stunning Soca Valley, Bovec is nicknamed the “Adventure Capital of Slovenia” for good reason. There is no shortage of unforgettable adventures to have here!
If you have been dreaming of going whitewater rafting in Slovenia, this is the place to do it.
While hiking and waterfall chasing are also perfectly wonderful and reliable options, kayaking trips and whitewater rafting excursions, and/or canyoning are deservedly famous in the Soca River Valley!
If you’re looking for a Slovenia travel base for all kinds of adrenaline-pumping outdoor adventures, Bovec is the place to be.
Mojstrana
The small village of Mojstrana is one of our personal favorite places in Slovenia, but this is due less to the village itself than what lies on its doorstep: unparalleled access to the beauty of Triglav National Park and–if you’re so inclined–Mr. Triglav itself.
The village itself is small, but it’s charming, peaceful, and has all the essentials (restaurants, a grocery store) to outfit you for hiking adventures.
Our hike to Sleme from Mojstrana was ultimately ill-fated, but it was still a sublime experience that we fully recommend!
There are also some lovely waterfalls nearby Mojstrana, like Pericnik Falls.
Portoroz
The bigger, more bustling cousin of Piran, Portoroz is a gorgeous resort town along Slovenia’s Adriatic coastline, and home to historic spa treatments, a beautiful marina, and luxurious resorts.
Above all, though, it’s the spa culture that Portoroz is best-known for after its seaside setting.
If you’re looking to enjoy the bite-sized Adriatic coastline of Slovenia, but want a few more amenities than what tiny Piran has to offer, Portoroz is an excellent choice.
The two towns are very close together, though, so you don’t necessarily need to choose between them!
Skofja Loka
Built along the Sora River and overlooked by the beautiful Skofja Loka Castle, Skofja Loka is one of the most beautiful towns in Slovenia.
In addition to the castle, Skofja Loka boasts a well-preserved medieval center to explore, viewpoints to admire, and one of the oldest bridges in Europe.
It’s also less than an hour from Ljubljana by bus, making it an easy addition to most Slovenia travel itineraries!
Kranj
Located a mere 30-45 minutes north of Ljubljana, the small city of Kranj is a fantastic destination for those looking to enjoy a quieter city in Slovenia.
While Kranj is the 4th largest city in the country, it’s only home to around 37,000 people!
The best-known feature of Kranj is its series of underground war tunnels built to protect citizens from WWII bombings, which you can tour today.
Kranj is also home to beautiful streets, an interesting ossuary, and a couple of lovely viewpoints from which to admire the city.
Gorgeous Slovenian Lakes & Waterfalls to Visit
Lake Bled
As the most iconic of all these places to visit in Slovenia (and a feature on many Europe bucket lists), Lake Bled definitely lives up to expectations!
Beautiful Lake Bled, complete with Bled Island in the center, is absolutely stunning and a fantastic place to visit.
Be sure to rent a rowboat for an afternoon, visit Bled Castle, sample a delicious slice of Bled Cream Cake, and seek out the best Lake Bled viewpoints during your visit (there are a lot of them).
While summer is the most classic time to visit, the spring blooms and fall foliage are also beautiful. For travelers hoping to avoid the crowds (and prices) that ideal weather brings, there is still plenty to enjoy in and around Lake Bled in winter, too.
Savica Falls
Located near Lake Bohinj, the beautiful Savica Falls are only a short walk from the road and are an absolutely unforgettable sight.
We absolutely loved our visit here, and highly recommend the short detour if/when you’re near Lake Bohinj!
As of 2026, there’s a 4 Euro fee to visit.
Lake Bohinj
Less manicured than nearby Lake Bled, but every bit as beautiful, gorgeous Lake Bohinj is an unmissable stop in Slovenia.
In addition to swimming and other watersports, the areas surrounding the lake are also popular for hikes both long and short.
You could easily plan an entire Slovenia vacation based around Lake Bohinj, though its proximity to the more-famous Lake Bled means that fewer travelers do (which can make it an excellent option for those looking for a quieter atmosphere).
Boka Waterfall
This stunning, multi-step waterfall is surrounded by karst mountains and is incredibly visually striking. Personally, it reminds me of the Grand Canyon of Yellowstone National Park!
Boka is located very close to Bovec, and you can either opt to admire it from the road or choose one of several viewpoint/hike options, depending on how committed you are and how close to the falls you want to get.
To see Boka Waterfall at its best, aim to visit in the springtime when the waterfall is at its most intense!
Pericnik Falls
As one of the highest waterfalls in Slovenia, Pericnik Falls is absolutely beautiful, and extremely easy to visit.
The trail is short, only around 15 minutes or so, though it is steep. For now, it’s still free to visit.
Unlike many of Slovenian waterfalls, you can also climb up and around Pericnik Falls to admire it from all angles. We loved walking behind the falls!
More Beautiful Places in Slovenia
Vintgar Gorge
The brilliant, beautiful blue water of Vintgar Gorge paired with its craggy walls and collection of wooden boardwalks you can stroll down make it one of the most beautiful places in Slovenia.
The boardwalks stretch for 1.6 kilometers, and it’s well worth spending the time to enjoy Vintgar Gorge from every angle.
Due to increased popularity over the years, visiting Vintgar Gorge is a more regimented (and expensive) experience than it once was, though it’s still stunningly beautiful!

Triglav National Park
The crown jewel of Slovenia’s natural beauty lies in Triglav National Park.
The craggy peak of Mt. Triglav itself is a national symbol of Slovenia, and the park includes some of the other best places to visit in Slovenia, including Lake Bohinj, Lake Jasna, many waterfalls, and Vogel, Slovenia’s best-known ski resort (and the mountain it was named after).
Suffice it to say that the best places to visit in Triglav National Park could take up an entire blog post (or guidebook) by itself, so we won’t get too far into the weeds here.
However, whether you’re looking for easy-to-access scenic views, complex mountaineering, or something in between, it’s safe to say that Triglav National Park should feature on your trip to Slovenia in some capacity!
Postojna Cave
As the most popular cave to visit in Slovenia, Postojna Cave is beautiful and enchanting, with soaring ceilings and incredible formations.
You can also take a train ride through the caves, an attraction that was first launched in the 19th century!
Soca River Valley
The bright blue Soca River is arguably one of the most beautiful rivers in the world, and the Soca River Valley that surrounds it is one of the best places to visit in Slovenia.
The valley is full of outdoor adventure activities and ways to appreciate the river’s beauty, from whitewater rafting to fishing to simply hiking along it.
You’ll find Bovec here, as well as endless campsites, hiking trails, and adventure outfitters.
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly when and where we felll head-over-heels in love with Slovenia, but it’s safe to say that the beauty of the Soca River had us enchanted from the very first glance.
The Vipava Valley
Located just south of the Goriska Brda wine region, and a bit bigger to boot, the Vipava Valley is another of Slovenia’s celebrated wine destinations, and has gained prominence in the last few decades.
If you’re looking for some vineyard-hopping with a side of beautiful views, this is the Slovenia travel destination for you!
If you’d rather not drive yourself (all the better to be able to taste as much as you like, guilt-free), this day tour to the Vipava wine region from Ljubljana is a great option.

Tolmin Gorge
The ice-blue water of the 1-kilometer long Tolmin Gorge is an unforgettable Slovenia travel destination, and a fairly accessible one to boot.
Technically named the Tolminka and Zadlaščica Gorges, a circular route will show you the best of the area, which also happens to be one of the (physically) lowest places in Triglav National Park.
If you’re headed to western Slovenia, be sure not to miss it!
Skocjan Caves
Featuring a mesmerizing underground river that will make you feel like you’re descending into a fantasyland worthy of Tolkien’s Middle Earth, the Skocjan Caves are one of the most unique places to see in Slovenia.
They’re also a UNESCO World Heritage Site!
We absolutely loved our visit here, and still consider it one of the most picturesque caves that we have ever visited (it’s simply hard to beat an underground river).
Logar Valley
Overlooked by the crisp peaks of the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and almost overwhelming in its natural beauty, the Logar Valley in Slovenia is one of those places where the air itself simply feels a bit crisper, and it is well worth visiting while in Slovenia.
Less touristed (especially by travelers from outside of Europe) than the Soca River Valley, but endlessly lovely, the Logar Valley is an incredibly peaceful place.
The Logar Valley Trail will lead you right through the valley in less than a day, which is an excellent introduction, though there are plenty of other adventures to pursue, too!
Goriska Brda
Often referred to as Slovenia’s Tuscany, Goriska Brda is a small but celebrated wine region that is well worth visiting, especially for wine-loving travelers looking to get off the beaten path.
Here, you’ll find not only delicious, award-winning wines, but stunning countryside views and lovely villages (don’t miss Smartno).

Beautiful Castles to Visit in Slovenia
Bled Castle
Nestled high above iconic Lake Bled, Bled Castle is one of the most popular places to visit in Slovenia.
This is in large part due to the absolutely phenomenal aerial views of Lake Bled and Bled Island that you can soak in from the castle and its grounds.
With a history of a defensive structure on the site reaching back to 1044, though, it’s safe to say that Bled Castle offers more than just its sublime views.
Predjama Castle
Of all these beautiful places to see in Slovenia, Predjama Castle may just have the most unique setting.
This Renaissance-era castle, built in the 1500s on the site of previous castles that had been destroyed, is built directly into the mouth of a cave!
It’s also part of the same park that Postojna Cave is, so unsurprisingly, people often combine visiting them into a single day trip.
Rihemberk Castle
With a turret dating to the 13th century that is every bit the fairytale image of a castle and an impeccable location on a high hill above the village of Branik, Rihemberk Castle (also known as Branik Castle) is a fantastic place to visit in Slovenia.
This is definitely a more off the beaten path castle to visit in Slovenia, but it’s a great option for escaping the crowds in places like Bled!
Ljubljana Castle
Standing tall above the city of Ljubljana for the last 900 years, Ljubljana Castle is one of the most popular castles to visit in Slovenia today, which is hardly a surprise since it’s located in the middle of the capital city!
The castle is accessed by a funicular that will ferry modern visitors to the top of the hill it rests on.
The castle is really multiple attractions in one, some more gimmicky than others, but we enjoyed the standard museum and views!
Zovnek Castle
First mentioned in records in the 12th century, Zovnek Castle (or more accurately these days, its repaired ruins) is one of the oldest castles in Slovenia and is accessed by a short hike from the road.
